North Devon Council is calling on members of the public to give their views on a new proposal for taxi fares in the area.

The council sets a maximum tariff that taxi drivers can charge for journeys. To make sure it covers the drivers' costs and is also affordable for their customers, the council wants to know what everyone thinks.

To do this, a consultation on the proposal is taking place between 16 June and 1 July. To take part in the consultation and provide your views, go to the 'Have your say' box on the council website www.northdevon.gov.uk.  Paper copies of the proposal can also be viewed in the reception area at the civic centre.

Chairman of the Licensing Committee, Councillor Joe Tucker says: "The committee was asked to review the maximum tariff set for taxi journeys in the area. At a recent meeting, members agreed a review could take place and that any proposals should go out for consultation.

"It's very important that all parties engage in this review, especially members of the public, as this is the first consultation on tariffs since 2003. Therefore, we want them to give us their views on the proposal, so that we can be sure the new tariff meets the needs of everyone involved. Taxi drivers are also being consulted individually."

Once the consultation has ended, all comments and representations will be presented to the council's Licensing Committee for consideration. The committee will then pass their suggestion for the most suitable tariff to the council's Executive to adopt.

I think the taxi fares are cheap! Even at 3am the fare home is only £4 and the drivers are very tollerant of drunken jibberish. My only critism of the taxi service in Ilfacombe is they are not 24 hours. I often get carried away in munchies after Whispers has closed so its about 4.30am when im ready to go home and not a taxi in sight. Now the street lights are well out by this time getting home at the end of the night is a worry. I would pay alot more to have a 24 hour taxi service.

I think taxis are usually really cheap in ilfracombe? But I suppose it depends who you get. I think each town in North Devon should have their own set of rules, at the moment I think Barnstaple taxis are way more expensive than Ilfracombe taxis and Ilfracombe people could suffer if charges were standardised.
