No new school building for Ilfracombe Arts College

A Labour government scheme that was to provide the funding for a major re-build of Ilfracombe Arts College has been scrapped.

Sharon Barnes, Head of Ilfracombe Arts College
The Building Schools for the Future Scheme was to contribute over 25 million pounds worth of financial support to the school, which was to fund a rebuild of over two-thirds of the school buildings.
According to the BBC news website (see here), the government decided to scrap the scheme as it was deemed "dysfunctional" and "unnecessarily bureaucratic" by Education Secretary Michael Gove.
This is of little comfort to the 1150 students that attend the school, as well as the staff that work there, who have been hugely disappointed by the news.

This money was not just to revamp Ilfracombe College, It was to go towards helping build a new school, as you know, Ilfracombe college, is not managing with the high number of pupils, that come from not just Ilfracombe, but Braunton, Combemartin and Lynton. So yes this is very bad indeed!
However Ilfracombe is not the only school to be stung by this, over 735 schools through out the country, have now just heard that thier funding is to be stopped, some of whom had already started building. Most of these schools had already been promised the funding. In the mean time, Camron refuse to send his children to public school, as he does not feel his children will benifit. Something not quite right about that.
Also Camron and dont forget Clegg (Devil in disguise), have now just started funding for free school activities, ie. sunday schools and summer holiday clubs. This makes no sence at all, if they are taking the funding from one project for schools and putting it into a different school project. Maybe it should be the pupils who vote for what they need most. As I think that the goverment would be very suprised by the outcome. Most children have thier activities for the summer holiday, and health visitors already help towards funding with certain activities, ie swimmming. So all this seems very pointless. I feel that Camron and Clegg are trying to axe everything the labour govermant has done, not for any over reason but pride, and I feel myself that maybe the need to look a little closer at the project set up by labour and see just how many people actually benifit from them.

ReportIt's such a shame they won't get this grant-that place looks like a terrible depressing factory or workhouse from the outside! Not a pretty sight for the holidaymakers as they drive into the town. Better buildings lead to happier people!

ReportThey do boast on their website... "There has been extensive renovation work to many areas of the College in recent years including a £3,000,000 major building project: the Beacon Arts Centre." so not so bad afterall!
I think we'd be suprised if we had a look around it now. Its changed alot since we were there! And sometimes a room/corridoor only needs a few bright display boards and it makes such a difference.

ReportWhat a real shame, it looks better on the outside (less prison like) but school in such need of a facelift inside. Would have been a boost for pupils and staff. Typical government i say! If they need something you can bet your life that they'll get, forget the people that ACTUALLY need it.

ReportI left Ilfracombe College in the late 90's and thinking back, most of the buildings could do with rebuilding then! I didn't really notice at the time though. At least it is blue now and not that horrible dull colour it was before!
