Enjoyed eating at at Chimes of St James for the first time a few nights ago. I have eaten at most restaurants in Ilfracombe and have to say that this is now my favourite. The food was just fantastic and the atmosphere cosy and welcoming. Love the local artwork on the walls and the staff really look after you. I hope this place does really well, best of luck to chef/owner John.

Chimes is a lovely place to go and eat, the decoration is simple, with a gorgeous floor and some lovely artwork by local artists. The welcome is always a warm one and often the chef is available to talk to freely. The food is locally sourced, well prepared and well cooked and all at a very decent price! There really is nothing I can say to fault this place because the value for money is there, the food is delicious, the staff are welcoming, polite and helpful and you can watch the chef work his magic!
If you are visiting Ilfracombe and are looking for somewhere to have a nice relaxed dinner or lunch then this is the place for you. In the warmer weather it's a treat to be able to sit outside and enjoy the sun while watching the world go by! It really is worth a visit and you won't be disappointed!
Excellent food, superbly cooked by a talented chef.
Very good value for money with generous portions.
Ideal for lunch or evening meal, with a wide selection of quality dishes and a good wine list.
I have been here with family and friends several times and will be back again.
Quite possibly the best English/European style restaurant in Ilfracombe.
I ate here for the first time last week and have to say I was really impressed, both by the quality of food and by the price. A (hearty) meal for two cost under £40 and the food reminded me of number 11 the quay back (in its heyday) when it first opened. The outdoor space is a real suntrap and you can even enjoy eating al fresco of an evening thanks to the outdoor heaters. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and the service was impeccable too. I'll be back.
