Back to School for Ilfracombe pupils!

Summer holidays are nearly over-although with the lack of sunshine you'd be forgiven for questioning if we've actually had a summer at all!

The dreary weather has left a lot of local parents tearing their hair out at being cooped up all day with the kids, and many people are suggesting that the holiday dates should be moved as we are getting our nicest weather in May and June these days with July and August being total washouts.

So with many parents eagerly anticipating their kids going back to school, Ilfracombe People are asking "Which are our best local schools?"

We are lucky in this area that we have several local Infants and Primary Schools to choose from, without having to take part in the cutthroat tactics deployed by parents in some cities to ensure their child gets a place at a decent school. Send your child to a primary school at Ilfracombe, Berrynarbor, Combe Martin, West Down and Woolacombe and you can be sure they will receive a great education in a safe and happy environment as shown in the performance data in Ilfracombe People's Ilfracombe School league tables

When it comes to secondary school, things get a bit trickier for Ilfracombe parents. Ilfracombe Arts College has undergone several improvements in recent years, including achieving specialist "Arts" status and building a £3,000,000 Arts centre for their students. However, the college received a blow when the new government scrapped the building schools for the future project along with the £25,000,000 funding that was in place for a new school building for the college.

The withdrawal of this government funding has prompted some local parents to consider sending their child slightly further afield to one of the private schools in the area. As one mother told Ilfracombe People "If the government has lost faith in supporting state schools, why should I? I'm putting some money aside and getting prospectuses for West Buckland School and Edgehill College for my children."

What do you think is the best local school in our area?

Having revisited Ilfracombe Infants 15 years after leaving myself to take my own child there i was amazed by the improvements. Its almost unrecognisable. Its so bright and cheerful, the teachers are young and enthusiastic and the current headteacher Christine Thompson knows every pupil by name. I understand from the school website she is infact multi-award winning!!

I believe that education for young peple isnt only about academic results. Its about their experinces which help them learn. In the summer term particularly the events calendar for the reception year was phenominal. I dont know how they managed to fit it all in and my child enjoyed every day. Dressing up, visits to local beaches, victorian week, healthy week & sports day, visit to the fire station (including squirting water from the hose!!), talks from the local police and much much more!! Its also beautifully recorded in a personal scrap book for each child (All about me book) so parents can see what they have been doing and which they can look back on in years to come.

Although the smaller schools have good results in maths, english and science, do the children have such great day to day experiences and with so few children attending them, are they getting the social interaction young children need?

I think the Ilfracombe Infants school is the best school in the local area without a shadow of a doubt! Everyone I know who went there loved it, the teachers are fantastic and work really hard.
