Think carefully about the aspirations of Ilfracombe Town Council. Who knows!

I meant quiet as in a "nice area". Where neighbours are friendly and don't play music till god knows what o'clock in the morning. Where you dont have teenagers hanging around on the street corner, not really doing any harm but making you aware that they are there. I come from a sleepy little town and have been lucky to have lovely neighbours. We fell in love with ilfracombe a couple of years ago and have made a point of visiting in different seasons so we get a more honest look at the place. We are looking forward to our move to Ilfracombe and have found people to be very friendly.

If I were you I would avoid the left-hand side (looking up) of Oxford Grove and Burnside. These are the roughest areas of town. Slade is not too bad but is right next to Burnside so....

topsyturvy65 basically picks out the poorest areas of Ilfracombe, which are fine most times of the day(i live there!)although watch out for drunk people weekends, they usually take a taxi back to Combe Martin about 3am!
Its not exactly Bronx in NYC where you have to walk six miles to get out of a gun infested ghetto(cuz taxis will never ever show up,,,,or buses!)
Ilfracombe is a great place,enjoy.........;-)

Thank you for the advice. I was concerned about Burnside, i had street googled the place and Slade Valley road looks lovely, but my concern was that it was the only way in and out of Burnside. We have walked around Ilfracombe late evening and it always felt safe, apart from a few noisy teenagers (and that alway make me apprehensive even though they are doing no harm). I suspected that there would be a few drunks, there always are espeacially in the summer. There are some lovely places on the market at the moment. Weather permitting we are house hunting these next two weeks. Hopefully we will find our next new home. Wish us luck :-)

Millie Pink don't be afraid of asking your estate agent. they are all local and they know the areas very well. Ask them. Also if you are down here in B & B speak to the owners they will help. Don't be afraid to ask people, everyone has their own opinions. We have lived here for 5 years and wouldn't live anywhere else.
PS we live along Slade Valley Road and although you are concerned that it is the 'only way in and out of Burnside' trust me, you will not have any problems. Take a walk around the reservoir and along the track and look back over the road and towards the Torrs, beautiful. Or if you are feeling really fit, walk up to the TV mast, along the footpath and down into Lee along the coast path. It's all here within your grasp.
Slade Valley Road does appeal i must admit. It is exactly what my husband wants. For me it is a little too far from town, but we plan to take a walk and see what the distance is in reality. One estate agent was quite possitive about the area, but the other two were a little reluctant to express an opinion. I am not a confrontational person and want to be happy where we move. My husband does not need any stress. that is the only reason i was concerned. We really have fallen in love with ilfracombe. We will be leaving early tomorrow morning and will take a careful slow drive. Normally take 5 hours on a good run, fingers crossed.

Can I just ask you what area you are moving from? I am surprised that 2 agents were reluctant to express an opinion, that's just plain daft. As I said if you are in B & B ask the owners.
When you are viewing houses ask the vendors about neighbours and if in doubt about the area go and knock on their door and ask. It's a big investment so good luck.
As to walk into town from Slade Valley Road, there are buses. See Filers website. Also taxis are really good here.
As for shopping - greengrocer delivers as does butcher if you are stuck and the co-op does a home delivery service.
Have a good trip and hope you find the house you want.
Thank you everyone for the advice and information. We have just got back from Ilfracombe. We had a very successful time and have brought a house in the centre of Ilfracombe. We did look at Slade Valley and spoke to one of the neighbours. He was very nice and informative. Unfortunately when we looked at the house, it was not in very good condition, and needed more work than we were willing to do. Ceilings falling down. plus other issues. From the front it looked lovely, so we were very disappointed with the state it was in. It was not meant to be. All going well we will be moved in by Easter. As usual we found everyone we spoke to friendly and kind. We are very much looking forward to our move down.

ReportNice to hear you found and brought somewhere, I had been following this thread but didn't really have an input due to not living in the area (yet). But it's nice to hear that this story had a happy ending. Enjoy your new life . :)

MilliePink, when you get here I hope you use our High Street. You'll get good service in Mike Turton, the butcher, Norman's the greengrocer and Nana Sue, the health food store. Buy your white goods from the Electric Store which is cheaper than Currys, etc.,and help keep the economy in this town going. Ilfracombe is at its best when it is buzzing. Are you retired, by any chance?

ROOMATTHETOP, One of the reasons for choicing ilfracombe to live in was the high street. This was why we wanted to have easy access to the town. We have already used the high street shops. All four of the shops you listed we have visited. I have already spotted a carpet shop but not as yet seen a decorating shop. The idea is to be able to step out of our door and nip out to get what we want when we want. My husband is retired and i am leaving a very good job here, but have not as yet decided on my plans. Just really looking forward to the move and our new adventure. And see what happens.

MilliePink, enjoy your move to Ilfracombe. I do hope you were warned about the astronomical price we pay for water here! South West Water Ltd is owned by The Pennon Group Plc and have the highest water charges in the UK. We have been promised a £50 rebate w.e.f. 2013 but as they have, once again, increased their charges, this is of little help.
It is official. As from the 5th April we will be resisdence of Ilfracombe. We have exchanged contracts, so no turning back now. We are so excited and really looking forward to being in our new home. A bit scarey though as we are leaving behind our family and friends but they will visit.
