hah ROOMATTHETOP, such a funny post, but you know what with the health and safety culture - that probably wouldn't be too far from reality :)

You're telling me, Khaizarana. This health and safety obsession has got to stop. I think that every child in Devon between 7 and 14 should be sent out for one day in July, during the school holidays, and made to fend for themselves or find something interesting and exciting to do. Out at 8am and back by 6pm.
They could play on beaches, run around on Braunton Burrows, go swimming, boating, go to museums, get on buses and trains unaccompanied and /or visit relations in another town. Exactly what we did in the 50s and 60s, and nobody batted an eyelid. And nobody ever came to any harm unless they were suicidally stupid, in which case they deserved it.

Yeah totally agree. I grew up in the 80's and my summer holidays and infact after school were spent venturing a lot further than my front garden. Used to spend all day out, many a times coming home with bloodied limbs but thats what kids did - got upto mischief that entailed nothing more than falling out of a tree or falling off a bike and occasionally dabbled in a bit of knock door run (if you know what that is lol).
Now fast forward to the present day and for example my niece who will never know what it's like to be a kid like I did (or you by the sounds of it, ROOMATTHETOP) - her childhood is spent only being allowed to play in her back garden or sat inside on her Nintendo DS.
Also I was reading today that some park in the south had workmen chop the heads off of snowmen built by kids at the weekend because of health and safety reasons. Shocking really.

If we start encouraging kids to go outside they might start hanging around on street corners, wearing clothes which includes hoods or caps. They'll probably buy some cheap lager from a dodgy corner shop. I know I did when I was a teenager and it never did me any harm. The magistrate I saw was of a different opinion.
Ah those teenage years away from my parents .. I do miss them. 1970's by the way.
