What a time to do it. With many people losing their jobs due to government cuts and VAT rising to 20% in January, what a lovely xmas present for people to see those meters springing up all over town!

Yes .. a great example of really poor decision making by people who have absolutely no appreciation about how to run a business in these tough economic times. It's actually one of the most debilitating decisions that could have been made for the town which is struggling enough as it is.

The meters are a pain it's true, but the charges don't start until the end of January, and your allowed to park for half an hour for free (but you still need a ticket).

At least you still get half an hour for free, but still wasn't nice to put the meters up right by xmas...

It is time that the High Street was paved over and traffic diverted via the sea front.. Oh, and Wilder Road car park made free. Very few small towns in Europe charge for parking in their shopping areas so why here in the UK? What do they do with the money?

How could it be made pedestrian only .. that is a brilliant idea .. who does this need to be raised with? is there an official document that needs to be submitted to the council?

I'm not sure it's a good idea to pedestrianise the high street? Wouldn't this cause even more traffic chaos than there is now? Especially in the summer! How would the shops and pubs get their deliveries?

Hi Sailorgirl - Obviously deiveries would be allowed to the shops, and in the area between Buddies and the Library buses and taxis too. It would only be private cars that would be banned. It seems to work in Barnstaple's High Street.. If the whole High Street was closed the traffic could go via the seafront.

I see where you're coming from ROOMATTHETOP but to be honest I think traffic congestion in Ilfracombe during the summer months is bad enough as it is! Where would the all the traffic coming through the town leave at the other end? Through the cove car park? I just don't see it working sorry :s
