I am now a old woman and I am utterly dismayed at the spectacle of prestigious football clubs recruiting from anyone and everyone but their own. I am not a rampant racist, far, far from it, but I quite like to relish the thought that Bobby Moore was born east of London, David Beckham was born east of London, Sol Campbell was born east of London, George Best was born somewhere in Belfast, Paul Gascoigne was born somewhere south of Newcastle, Wayne Rooney was born somewhere in Liverpool and so on and so forth. That prestigious football clubs often see fit to recruit star players from elsewhere in the world suggests to me that our people are failing to promote their own talent. Please lads address the issue. Furthermore, lads who play rugby are also ardent football fans. My authority to state the latter stems from the grandchildren of my two sisters. Many of my sisters' grandchildren play rugby, largely because of the influence of the respective children's fathers. However, I warmly recall the ability of the baby boys, when we had Christmas get togethers prior to my late father's death in 1999, to identify a vast array of football players from little precast "busts" of prime football players, the "busts" being Christmas stocking fillers. To my amazement, the tiny ones, barely knee high, could name and identify from the miniture precast "busts", the respective players and the team that they played for.
