Turning on of the lights (what is this like?)
By Khaizarana | Sunday, November 13, 2011, 01:58
I usually only come down to Ilfracombe in the Summer months but after reading about the lights being turned on I have decided to come down to see this event.
I am just curious what to expect - Is there usually a big crowd of people from the surrounding towns come to see it too like they did at the Carnival in August? Is there a fete or other events that make it one special day and is there anyone famous turning on the lights.
Apologies if those are silly questions.

Did you make it? Shame it rained, it seemed a little lacklustre in the end. Maybe we need some new lights on the main tree?

ReportFirstly thanks for the photos from 2010, Adelle. It looks quite an event to say the least, probably looks better than I imagined.
Piglet you make it sound like I hoped in terms of getting you into the Christmas spirit, being from a big city you don't really get that feeling in regards to the build up to Christmas.
Thanks again for the replies, roll on Nov 30th!!

ReportI always have a great night at the lighting of the lights it really gets you in to the christmassy spirit. There's always a big turnout and a good atmosphere. After watching the parade, switch-on and fireworks you can do late-night shopping at the shops and stalls and there are street performers etc and a burger from outside Turton's butchers is a must! As you can tell I love it, but it's down to personal opinion I suppose- please let us know what you think afterwards and I hope you enjoy it!

ReportI knew it wouldn't be massive on the scale of Blackpool and I'm glad it isn't if I am honest. From what you have said Thornerg that sounds perfect to me, thanks for the reply.
