School closures in Ilfracombe on Wednesday 30th November due to Public Sector Strike Action

All three of Ilfracombe's schools will be closed this Wednesday 30th November 2011 due to a public sector strike.

Workers at Ilfracombe Infants, the Junior School, and Ilfracombe Arts College will all be taking part in the industrial action this Wednesday, as will union members at Combe Martin Primary school which means closures for all four schools. 

Over 2 million workers across the UK are expected to take part in the national strike on Wednesday. Members of 23 unions are staging the strike to voice their discontent over planned alterations to pensions that would see public sector workers paying more and working longer for less money.

The proposed changes would mean that as well as paying more into their pension fund and retiring later in life, workers would have to accept a 'career average' pension instead of a final salary based pension-yet another pension cut that the unions have deemed unacceptable.

The strike on Wednesday will not just affect schools, there may be disruptions and delays to waste collection and recycling, at local hospitals, benefit offices and job centres as well as in most areas of public sector work.
