The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is now calling for entries to their popular annual photographic competition that celebrates the life and scenery of North Devon and Exmoor.

The North Devon Heritage Photographic Competition 2011 is free to enter and open to anyone of any age. The competition, which aims to encourage awareness and appreciation for the region's character and scenery, is divided into six categories: Towns & Villages, the Coast & the Sea, Landscape, Characters, Wildlife and Anything Goes. All photos must be taken in North Devon or on Exmoor and be submitted to the museum by 17 October 2011.

Judging the photographs submitted this year will be Robin Ravilious and Andy Robinson.  Robin has curated several photography exhibitions for Beaford Arts and assisted her husband - renowned photographer James Ravilious, in curating some of the 80,000 black and white images he captured of the region's rural life.  The Guild of Photographers member Andy Robinson, from J&A Cameras, will be adding his vast experience and knowledge to the judging panel.

For this year's competition, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon are delighted to welcome a new prize sponsored by the Heart of Exmoor Scheme.  In recognition of Exmoor's moorland heritage and the fragility of its habitat, any image that captures the beauty and life of the moorland areas of Exmoor will be eligible for inclusion into this category.

Once again the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) will be sponsoring a category for those photographs entered into this year's competition featuring trees and hedges.  2011 has been designated the International Year of Forest and a spokesman for the AONB adds:

"Woodlands and hedge banks are a fundamental feature of the AONB landscape.  They provide an irreplaceable wildlife resource and greatly add to the distinctiveness of the area."

As well as the awards and prizes being offered to the winning photographers, selected entries from the competition will be shown in the North Devon in Photographs exhibition, which will run at the Museum from 26th November 2011 to 14th January 2012.
