New BBC map highlights North Devon road accident blackspots

A new BBC map which shows all deaths on UK roads between 1999-2010 is now online. 

The public can now see all accident danger spots in and around Great Britain. Using official data recorded by police in Great Britain between 1999 and 2010, the BBC have plotted every road collision in which someone died. In all, 36,371 fatalities are marked on the interactive map. 

During the eleven year period there were 63 deaths on the roads of North Devon. The map allows you to search by the type of vehicle involved in the accident whether it be car, bike, bus, motorcycle, goods vehicle, pedestrian or other.

There have been five deaths in Ilfracombe from road traffic accidents from 1999-2010 mainly involving elderly motorists in around the town centre. Local accident blackspots to look out for when driving around North Devon include the dual carriageway on the way to Barnstaple and of course the infamous North Devon Link Road on which there have been 17 fatalities during the allocated time period.

We are lucky in North Devon that our local roads are relatively safe to drive on compared to other parts of the country. In some areas the death toll during the same time period has reached up to five times the amount on our roads.
