Devon County Council are inviting local people to have their say on further reductions in public spending at a public meeting at the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe on Friday 7th October at 6.30pm.

Last year, public spending needed to be cut. Devon County Council had to save £54 million and faced difficult decisions about how to deliver vital local services while cutting costs. The Tough Choices campaign was launched to let us locals have their say on what services we thought were important to our community.

In the results of the National Place Survey last year 85% of residents said they were happy with Ilfracombe as a place to live, although the following issues were of greatest concern:

  • Activities for teenagers
  • Job prospects
  • Wage levels and the local cost of living
More cuts are expected to be made this year (a further 30 million from services) and the meeting on Friday 7th October is an opportunity for locals to let the council know what services are most important to our community, as well as to meet the Leader of Devon County Council and find out about what was done in response to last year's consultation.

Make sure you have your say on the tough spending choices that have to be made in our town this year-if you can't make the meeting then have your say by completing the survey on the Tough Choices website. The survey asks which services you think savings should be made from, and which you think need protecting. Service options vary from caring for the elderly, to streetlights, libraries, refuse and recycling collection to foster care plus many more.

    a) I would suggest that persons of a "certain" age should retire to make way for the young folk.

    b) I would suggest that the various tiers of government should consider their excesses in expenditure.

    c) I would suggest that the cutting of the hourly evening bus service from Barnstaple to Ilfracombe is entirely regressive. The best things in life are free and failing that the best things in life are available to the financially stretched. Removing the means by which all the people are able to avail themselves of the cultural delights of Barnstaple is tantamount to removing a higher culture from Ilfracombe.
